Illegal squatters forced to spend night on the streets

JOHANNESBURG – Residents of Fattis Mansions will spend a cold night on Johannesburg's streets.

At around 8:3 am on Wednesday morning, the notorious Red Ants moved into Harrison Street in downtown Johannesburg armed with an order to evict the residents of the hijacked building Fattis Mansions.

Residents claim that they were given no warning and that members of the Red Ants stole their money, cellphones and other belongings. “We were not even given a chance to go back inside and get our personal stuff,” claimed a resident who refused to give her name.

“I don’t know if I will find all my documents, it is not fair for them to just come and chase us out,” she added.

Shopkeepers who operate out of the ground floor of the building were just as surprised and also claimed that they were given no warning. They were, however, allowed to remove their stock from the shops and relocate this stock elsewhere.
