Teen drowns near Hibberdene

The teens were reportedly caught in strong rip currents near Hibberdene on Saturday.

TWO teenagers were swept out to sea at Turton, near Hibberdene, last Saturday. It is thought they had been caught in a strong rip current.

The NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew was dispatched at about 11.30am.  Spokesman Craig Lambinon said the search party was bolstered by a police helicopter and ambulance services.

“One of the teenagers was found and safely rescued, but the other is still missing. The police search rescue team will continue the search operation today,” he said.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid the rescued teenager is said to be fine.

In another incident, a 20-year-old man got into difficulty while swimming at the Port Edward main beach yesterday. It is believed he also became caught in a rip current which swept him about 100m out into the rough sea.

He however managed to break free of the current and was assisted to shore by lifeguards.

He was treated at the scene and transported to hospital for further treatment.

Bathers are urged to swim only in designated bathing areas when lifeguards are on duty and to stay between the bathing flags.
