“I consider myself a painter, although drawing makes up a large portion of painting. When I left school I had some painting and drawing lessons with my aunt, who is an artist. I applied to study it in university and I had to submit a portfolio of artworks to the Durban University of Technology to prove my artistic ability because I didn’t take art as an official subject at school,” she explained.

South Coast’s creative Anke van der Linden (22) not only draws and paints, but is also a jewellery designer.

Anke said her first draft was challenging but she managed to improve on her skills the more she practised. “Drawing and painting skills definitely improve the more you practise.

I believe one can definitely make a little bit of extra money, especially when it comes to portraits and illustrations of books,” she said.

She added that she finds drawing and painting a therapeutic hobby. “With jewellery design being my main profession, drawing and painting in jewellery design is done regularly so that customers can see the idea you have in your mind sketched and painted on paper.

“I sometimes sit down and draw what I enjoy, from people to animals and plants; just to escape from the inorganic and mechanical style of drawing and designing jewellery. God has definitely blessed me with my artistic ability and I use this talent to express His grace and glory to the world,” she said.
