Fidler in the Hood: There’s a whole lot of living to do

Classical, good quality music is something rare in these parts, so it's vital that we try to support these events.

G-G-G-GREETINGS! A couple of weeks back, your scribe wrote that spring will be a little late this year, but did not mean for it to be this late.

Seeing that he’s not one who believes in climate change or global warming, he’s beginning to have second thoughts. However, the law must be tempered with reason – after all, which is more preferable?

Having a sundowner watching the sunset over Hibiscus Coast or eating fish and chips whilst battling the elements on a cold, wet, windy night in Grimsby? Who says the age of romanticism is dead? On with the show.

Same time and place

The current cold snap certainly affected the local social whirl. The Shafts’ annual ‘Swing into Spring’ champagne breakfast had to be postponed (not cancelled) due to heavy rains and inclement weather.

Fortunately the message that ‘rain had stopped play’ got out in time and there was nought for comfort. However, all is not lost. It at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

The club will hold the champers breakfast tomorrow (12th) same time, same place – Ramsgate beach, Blue Lagoon end.

Weather forecast is blue skies from now on, so, see you there, friendly folks, and it’s a good reason to get out of the house.

Moondeckers, literally

Moondeckers will celebrate the month of September’s International Literacy Day with a recital of poetry and book reading at Ramsgate Whale Deck this coming Saturday (September 14) evening at 5pm.

Sadly the annual literacy festival itself has fallen away, however, the spirit is still willing. Moon worshippers will have the opportunity to while away a couple of hours with old and new faces. Please bring drinking glasses, something to fill those glasses with and wrap up warmly.

Hopefully, the full moon will make its promised appearance and a good time will be enjoyed by all.

Just in case’ the moon doesn’t pitch up in all its glory, it tends to get rather dark walking to and from the Ramsgate Whale Deck, so bring a torch as well.

Moonrise is at 6.05pm and festivities commence from 5pm. For catering purposed, please let organisers know in advance if you will be attending.

Prego rolls are on the menu and a lucky raffle is held, so remember some extra cash. All proceeds go towards running the conservancy. For further information, contact Adrian Voice at 083 2867901, or email adrianvoice@gmail.com. See you there.

Calling all culture vultures

For those culture vultures out there who like the sounds of Spanish guitars, make a note in your social diary.

As part of the South Coast Spring Wine Festival being held at Riverbend Crocodile Farm over the Heritage weekend (Sunday, September 22), popular concert pianist Christopher Duigan and classical guitarist James Grace will team up to play arrangements of much-loved melodies, featuring Latino and Spanish classics, including ‘Tico Tico’ and Luis Bonfa’s ‘Manha de Carnaval’ (from ‘Black Orpheus’).

Good for the soul and all quaffed with a glass of vino. If your tipple is champagne, your luck’s in. Preceding the concert, ticket-holders will be able to taste the bubbly on offer. It’s a hard life down here.

Classical, good quality music is something rare in these parts, so it’s vital that we try to support these events.

Christopher will also play his own composition ‘Indigo’ – a favourite at any concert. So come along and embrace the sounds of Spain, Argentina and Brazil, played by world-class musicians.

The always-popular Guinea Pig Kitchen dining club will hold its September spring lunch also on September 22.

Although ‘she’ is mentioned on the good-enough-to-eat menu, Julia Childs of ‘Riviera’ fame will not be making an appearance. More’s the pity.

Now, if it was Lena Olin, that would be a different matter – a man can dream, can’t he?

Another month to get through down here. Who needs bad news when there’s still a lot of good things going on? Africa: Your scribe will give it another week. See you, Rob.
