Philani grew up in Gcilima on the KwaZulu-Natal coast and fell in love with the ocean.

He dreamed of being the first black South African surfing champ, but many family and personal hardships changed the course of his life.

With a decade of surf coaching Experience at a provincial and national level, Philani Sikobi started Genesis Wave of Hope Surf Academy in 2017.

While volunteering at the Genesis Youth Centre, Philani met young people from the neighbouring communities of Bhobhoyi and Murchison, and invited them to join his new surf academy. He now has 65 surfers (boys and girls) from the areas around Marburg and Port Shepstone.
Philani is able to not only find talented young surfers as a surf coach, but is also changing lives as a mentor and a life coach. Surfing provides opportunities to travel and meet inspiring people, but also is a tool to teach life skills, do homework, and support young people and their families.
Philani wants to change lives through the gift of surfing- not to make world champion surfers, but world changing young men and women.
