More parking bays for disabled at mall in Scottburgh
Those who park illegally will face a R500 clamping fee.
The disabled community has for many years battled with selfish motorists for parking spots at public places such as shopping centres.
In an effort to help this community feel seen and heard, Scottburgh Mall opened up a new disabled parking area last week, in addition to its already established parking bays for the disabled.
Mall management stated that the parking bays will be monitored by the car guards and is only for customers in wheelchairs. Those who choose to disregard this and park illegally will face a R500 clamping fee.
Sue Martin, a regular shopper who became wheelchair-bound after a freak mountain bike accident several years ago, is grateful for the new parking area.
“It is a big enough parking area for us to get the vehicle door open and have space to get in and out,” she explained.
“Many motorists have shown a total disregard for our predicament, so I am glad that our local mall is looking out for us. This makes me feel respected and as part of the community.”
Gordon Vorster who has been a car guard at the mall for over a decade mentioned that they will be stricter with motorists who park illegally in the other disabled spots as well.
“I have always dealt with motorists who have attitudes and feel like they can park wherever they want, but we have bigger notices up now about wheel clamping consequences, so they are warned,” he said.
Scottburgh’s ward councillor Dana Daniels thanked Scottburgh Mall and mall manager Duncan Momplé for making Scottburgh a little more wheelchair-friendly, and requests the public to park where applicable.
