Cavaliers boost sport in the South

Children benefit from Cavaliers funds.

THE Cavaliers, which is an organisation within Suburbs Sports Bowling Club, annually run the Cavaliers bowling tournament and raises funds in support of various sports persons in the South.

The tournament takes place over different weekends during the year at the club where many clubs in and around Johannesburg participate in and support the tournament.

Over the past nine years, Ross Webber and Deborah Ferguson have been in charge of running the tournament, but have also been involved in the Cavaliers tournament since its inception. They would like to take the opportunity to thank all involved in helping to make this tournament a big success over these years.

The money raised is for the numerous children and sports people in the South that they have assisted over the years to compete in various fields, is no small feat and this could not have been achieved without each and everyone who competed in the tournament every year. This year an amount of R76 975 was raised and it will go towards Linhill Celtic Football club and the Box Office.

Each organisation will receive an amount of R35 000 to each of the following sporting facilities that have the youth of the south at heart.

CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM FUNDS: The Cavaliers bowling tournament raised funds to benefit sport in the South. Ross Webber and Deborah Ferguson together with some of the soccer players at Linhill Celtic FC.

Linhill Celtic FC has numerous under privileged children that need support with boots and kit. The club has many children from the adjoining areas and does not turn anyone away. This firstly keeps the youth off the streets and in the long run prevents crime as soccer gives the youth something to strive for and assists with self-confidence.

The boxing club situated at Suburbs Recreation Centre, Box Office gymnasium, in conjunction with Fight with INSIGHT has been training children with difficult backgrounds for ten years. Two years ago they started a new version where they got involved with the children before they made mistakes and went through the court system.

Their project has trained over 130 child sex offenders who were children themselves. The club then embarked on training all youth in Hillbrow who were in conflict with a crime. So far they have trained about 1 000 children in Hillbrow. Box Office took it upon them to train children from St. Mary’s, Nkosi’s Haven for Aids affected children as well as the Talisman Foundation for men of mental distress.

Recently it’s become evident that bully and anger management training is a necessity as well as training children who lack confidence. The donation together with others will be starting a project that will train children three times per week and get them in line with society by breaking anger issues and building the confidence necessary to be a successful student.

Debra and Ross have enjoyed the years of hosting the tournament and feel a great sense of achievement in assisting the sports children in the south.
