Petrol price highest ever

At midnight on Tuesday February 4 the petrol price hit its highest yet at just under R14 per litre.

As motorists queued at filling stations in the South of Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, the CHRONICLE spoke to a few customers as they waited to fill up.

“I can’t manage now! I don’t know how I’m going to afford petrol in the future. I think car sharing will have to become an option for many who travel to work, although it doesn’t always work out sharing but from now on it’s going to have to be a priority,” said a Bassonia woman.

“The state of the economy in South Africa is going crazy. I believe there could even be another petrol price increase in the near future. Consumers aren’t going to manage,” said an irate man at a filling station in Oakdene.

“I blame the government for all these rising costs. We have to fork out for e-tolls, higher prices in food and now more for petrol. Maybe it’s time for a change in government. Another party couldn’t do any worse!” a Glenvista resident said.

It’s more than certain food prices are set to rise in the near future and consumers are going to have to tighten their belts.

According to economist, Dawie Roodt, he says it’s likely another fuel price hike will take place next month.
