JOHANNESBURG – Friday afternoon, February 28, and the excitement mounted as 28 learners from schools across Gauteng started to arrive for a Boarding Experience Weekend at Dominican Convent School.
Among those primary schools were Park Senior, Robertsham, Townsview and Winchester Ridge.
Warmly welcomed and assisted by Dominican Convent School learners, they registered, stowed their bags away in the hostel and watched an orientation video. After that it was time to participate in an exciting i-Pad lesson, where they had to create their own superheroes under the guidance of Mr Nkomo and Dominican Convent School pupils.
Dinner of roast chicken, chips and salad was followed by an exciting treasure hunt game co-ordinated by Tom Tehaar and Junai Hall, gap year students from Stowe School. Visitors and Dominican Convent School boarding pupils played games and socialised and got to know each other. Then it was snack time, ablutions, devotions and lights out.
The next morning dawned bright and early. After a delicious breakfast of cereal, porridge and bacon and eggs, a busy morning was spent drumming with Mr Rathlagane, drama with Ms Kholopane and volleyball and basketball with Mr Nkomo and Ms Susan Maleho.
Parents arrived to fetch their children and were able to watch a video of their children’s weekend experiences. All too soon it was time to collect bags and a packed lunch and to say goodbye to new friends. We hope to all meet again next year, when many of these visitors become permanent members of the Dominican Convent School family.
“My child was so impressed with the environment and the general atmosphere around your boarding house, particularly the reception from your current learners. I also am praying for her to be successful in her application, because I’ve been longing for an environment such as yours for my daughter.
She would definitely take up boarding should she be admitted to your school next year. Keep up the good work,” said Lindelwa Lufele.
