Residents of Victoria Street up in arms

One end of Victoria Street in Rosettenville, backs on to the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre, where an event, DJ in the Park, is going to be held on Saturday April 12 from 10:00 to 22:00.

ROSETTENVILLE – “The bottom of our street is a cul-de-sac which backs onto Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre,” said a group of residents who live there.
“On Tuesday April 1 two men arrived and said they were going to break down the wall to make an entrance into the grounds of Southern Suburbs. We asked them why and who they were but they didn’t respond,” said Rod Visser.

Concerned residents met with the Comaro CHRONICLE on Wednesday April 2 at 08:00, when the two men said they would return to begin knocking down the wall. By 09:00 they hadn’t arrived but did so a while later, telling the residents they had permission to knock the wall down.

On Thursday morning April 3, the men returned yet again. “We spoke with them again but they wouldn’t say where they were from,” said Visser. The group of concerned residents walked around to the entrance of Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre and spoke to one of the staff members, asking to speak to the manager, who was apparently away at a meeting.

Mr Douglas Middleton, manager of Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre was contacted by the CHRONICLE and said, “We have to have another exit from the grounds, there’s presently only the one in Berg Street, in case of an emergency. The wall will be broken down at the last possible time next week before the event and a security guard will be stationed there 24/7. The wall will be re-built again on Monday April 14.”

“We are very concerned about the security if there’s a hole in the wall as in the past we have had people climbing over during the night. As it is we live in a quiet cul-de-sac and the noise levels from the event are going to be atrocious. As long as Mr Middleton keeps his word and the wall is re-built, we’ll put up with it for the weekend but it must be re-built on the Monday after the event,” the residents said.
