LINMEYER – After electricity cables were unearthed and stolen by two men last week in Regents Park, two others had the same idea and arrived in a bakkie on Friday January 9 on the corner of Johan Meyer Street and Elizabeth Avenue, Linmeyer and began digging a trench.
Various residents in the area stopped and asked what they were doing and for what reason and each time were given different answers. According to one resident, “A motorist stopped and said the same two men had dug a trench outside his house last week and when they finished a white vehicle arrived and they cut the cables in the ground and loaded them into a bakkie. It was established later that they had stolen the cables.”
This was brought to the attention of Moffatview CPF Sector 2, who contacted City Power and they dispatched their security to the scene. The men who were digging the trench did not have a job card or job number and informed City Power security they were working for a certain person by the name of Justice. They called Justice who could not give them a job number either. The security gave Justice a certain time to come out to the site and produce the job card. After 30 minutes they called the same number back, only to be told, “You have the wrong number.”
City Power security then called the same number and pleaded with Justice to come out to resolve the situation and he asked that the security meet him somewhere with the workers, but he failed to arrive. The labourers were then arrested and charged.
