Controversial former African bank executive dies

The African Bank executive was known as ‘the guy who said “F*** the poor”’.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Sowetan reported the death of the the infamous Tami Sokutu, who died at the age of 53 after a short illness.

Sokutu gained popularity late last year when he said “F*** the poor” in what has been said to be a drunken interview with Sunday Times.

He apologised a week later, saying that his previous interview with the newspaper “gave the impression that I don’t care about the millions of poor South Africans, who’ve lost money as a result of the current problems facing African bank”..

According to BDLive, he was born in the village of Mqanduli, near Mthatha and studied at the University of Cape Town, where he acquired his master’s degree in advanced plant systematics in 1992.

Sokutu joined African Bank in 2002 and was appointed to the board a year later.

Sokutu is survived by his wife, Nosisi, son, Wanda, and daughter, Sandi.
