SELECTED learners from Horizon High School participated in the International Festival of Language and Culture (IFLC) festival held at the Joburg Nelson Mandela Theatre on March 18.
Horizon High School not only promotes and encourages learners to reach beyond their dreams, but ensures that diversity and mutual respect is a core value.
The IFLC organised by the International Association of Turkish Language (TÜRKÇEDER) – is an annual celebration which showcases a diversity of linguistic talents from across the world.
The IFLC comprises two categories: The Cultural Festival and The Turkish Olympiad. The International Festival of Language and Culture first started in 2003 and proceeded with only 17 countries participating. Whereas last year, 145 countries took part in this event with more than 2500 participants. The mission of The International Festival of Language and Culture is to be both a resource and an advocate for the value of diversity and inclusion.
The IFLC serves to support young students around the world learning the Turkish language. It also gives them an opportunity to promote their own cultures among their peers from around the world and to local audiences. It is our mission to support and promote fellowship and dialogue among the youth of all cultural backgrounds.
It is with great awe that from April 22 until May 7, 12 learners from Horizon High School will be sponsored by the IFLC committee to take South African flavour to the United States of America. The learners will be showcasing African gumboot dancing, incorporating Ubuntu through the song Shosholoza and showing how South Africans embrace diversity by dancing a traditional Turkish Folk dance.
Respect, tolerance and goodwill are the key factors to enjoying the diversity of our world, and through IFLC and Horizon High School the aim is to ensure that Ubuntu and respect are embraced not only internationally but locally too.
