Bringing green glam to Gold Reef City
Empowering young women to be ambassadors in the waste sector
MISS Earth South Africa regional finalists came together at Tsogo Sun Gold Reef City Theme Park in Johannesburg. They work-shopped and engaged in green activities across the city.
The participants took part in an experiential tour of the Pikitup Southdale Depot to allow for a deeper understanding of waste and the journey of waste. The Miss Earth South Africa campaign for 2016 is titled #WasteStopsWithME.
The objective is to create an understanding of the problem and to highlight the importance of each individual’s impact. This was followed by a tour of the Johannesburg central business district (CBD), where the team was able to see hijacked buildings, illegal dumping, informal recycling depots and the challenges of waste. The story of informal pickers, landfill space and water contamination were all issues that were unpacked and discussed.
The programme included yoga sessions by Lorna Jane, and a workshop by Edith Venter on the attributes of a brand ambassador. Finance and the management of money was addressed by Thabo Hollo from Nedbank, and the finalists were given a basic understanding of what planning they should be doing as young women.
Ella Bella, director of Miss Earth South Africa, explained, “We have to create a balance in our young women. We want them to understand wellness, finance and the environment while balancing their EQ with their IQ. The Miss Earth South Africa is looking for an environmental spokesperson who understands the challenges that we are facing and who can be a role model and a mentor to the younger generation. The finalists have rolled out several educational waste campaigns and community clean-ups. They came together to share their stories and experiences. Working with people across all ages is rewarding and creates a shift in mindset. Our objective is to find solutions to waste. I believe we are succeeding.”
All the hard work was balanced by fun @TheMovies at Gold Reef City. They even made time for tenpin bowling and, of course, ‘Shrek The Musical’ was the highlight of the week. Shrek came to life at Gold Reef City and the show was truly magical.
Makhosazana Dubazana from Palmridge rolled out her waste project at Zinhle Aftercare Centre, teaching children about waste and recycling. Makhosazana’s chosen career path is that of environmentalist. She is passionate about the environment and the people who live in it.
