Carnage on our roads soars

A total of 328 road emergencies were received by the EMS call centre during the Easter Holidays.

JOHANNESBURG Emergency Management Services (Jems) responded to the high number of pedestrian accidents during the Easter weekend from March 29 to April 3.

Their call centre received a total of 328 calls regarding road emergencies during this time. Of that number, 183 were motor vehicle accidents and 145 were accidents involving pedestrians of which five had fatalities.

Robert Mulaudzi, the spokesperson for City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, said: “We would like to urge our residents to exercise extreme caution when walking and also crossing the road. Residents are urged to wear visible clothing especially at night and also to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing the freeway and refrain from drinking and walking – especially at night. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving on our roads, to obey the rules of the road, to keep to the prescribed speed limit and to keep a safe following distance in order to prevent motor vehicle accidents.

“Through our Public Education Section, we will continue to intensify our public education initiatives in schools and at early childhood development centres, shopping centres, places of worship, churches and malls in order to create a culture of road safety amongst our residents throughout the City of Johannesburg,” Mulaudzi said.
