Celebrating elderly fathers and mothers at South Rand Rec-Centre
Father’s and Mother’s Day celebration for the elderly was a success.
MOTHER Sylvia Community Service celebrated Father’s and Mother’s Day for the elderly at South Rand Rec-Centre in South Hills on June 23.
Mother Sylvia is a community-based NPO which was founded by Sylvia Govender in 2006 working with the elderly in different areas in the south and east of Johannesburg. She told the COURIER that she saw the gap in the community because she feels that in most of the old age homes the elderly are shunned.

Sylvia has four old age homes, of which two are in the South, one in Rosettenville and the other in South Hills. All these homes came together for the celebration and enjoyed good food and entertainment. The elderly displayed their dancing talent on the stage showing excitement and appreciation for what has been done for them.
Elderly couples were dancing the tango and singing love songs for the audience. It was an exhilarating and harmonious event. Even young people were in attendance to celebrate with their grandmothers and grandfathers.
“This celebration of Father’s and Mother’s Day that we celebrated today was made possible by me and the community members with their donations. We are making sure that the elderly receive the best care at the homes that we have. Celebrations of this nature are always conducted just to inspire the senior citizens.

“I wish the government can help me to help more elderly people because if I can be funded by the government I can do more. Help from the community is also welcome,” said Sylvia.
If anyone would want to help, they can contact Sylvia Govender on 081 558 7688.
