Booysens SPCA accommodates unloved and neglected animals

THE Johannesburg SPCA at 5 Benray Road, Reuven, Booysens, is all about keeping animals healthy and safe – giving them a second chance and trying to find a forever home for these animals.
Their kennel section contains about 200 cats and dogs. Most of the animals are abandoned and many of the animals were physically abused by their previous owners. One dog that was rescued was showered with hot water. His injuries were so bad that his skin peeled.
The SPCA has an outreach where they educate communities on pet care and the importance of sterilisation. The SPCA uses mobile clinics for their outreach programmes. The outreach programme services townships like Orange Farm, Jackson’s Drift, Lenasia South and the Vaal. They even go to local schools to educate learners about pet care and to instil a love for animals at a young age. When one wants to adopt a pet you must fit certain criteria and you will be assessed and evaluated to ensure that the animal has a safe and warm home.
Liana Mary, kennel manager, said: “The SPCA is growing from strength to strength and we want to keep it that way. What people should know is that we are not killing animals here, we give animals love and protection. Most of the animals that are brought to us come from abusive homes and we make it a point to give them a safe home. What we mostly emphasise is the sterilisation of animals because if you can’t handle one dog, three will be impossible and that’s where negligence starts.”

The SPCA is requesting donations of food, donations, clothes and other necessities for the animals in order to keep the SPCA going. For more information, you can contact the SPCA offices on 011 681 3600.
