Volunteers cut long grass in Oakdene
Citizens should also get involved in keeping the city clean.
MACS Garden Service recently volunteered to cut the long grass and a thorn bush on the pavement along Swartberg Drive in Oakdene following several complaints of unattended council services in the area.
Owner of the garden service, Richard Zackey, said as a resident of the South he believes in community engagements whenever possible and that is why his team rendered their assistance to Oakdene.
Ward 56 Councillor Michael Crichton expressed gratitude over the assistance in grass cutting saying more citizenry involvement in keeping the city clean would be appreciated.
“I would like to thank Richard Zackey and his team from Macs Garden service for assisting the community by cutting this long stretch of grass. This really ties in with the mayor’s A Re Sebetseng campaign where we encourage the citizens and companies to get involved in assisting us to keep the city clean,” he said.
Crichton challenged more companies to follow the example set by Macs Garden service as the City of Johannesburg has been battling with funds in the past financial year to cut grass across the city.
“Due to the R170-billion worth of infrastructure backlog that the City’s administration inherited from the previous administration, financial constraints have been affecting some services and one of the suburbs that has felt the impact of this is Oakdene, which has several streets with badly overgrown grass,” he said.

The problem has left pedestrians being forced to walk in the streets, instead of utilising the pavements while the long grass has also become a hideout for criminals, stolen goods and littering.
