Jackson Drift’s ladies keep busy by playing cards

‘Playing cards keeps us entertained.’ - Lerato Ratau

WITH all the time on their hands because of unemployment, Jackson Drift informal settlement’s older women keep themselves busy playing cards every day.

The ladies start at 10am and about 16 women take part every day. Men aren’t allowed to play said the women because during these games they share their private conversations. Conversations often turn to the unattended service delivery they are facing in the settlement.

“We loving being together as ladies and most of us are single, so we keep ourselves entertained with card games. Having no job is painful but sitting around and mourning about it won’t help at all, so we decided to play cards every day and we don’t get bored,” said resident Lerato Ratau.

Although the games are being played at different places, they have one rule, it has to be played at one of the participant’s houses.
