CITY of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) section 79 safety committee, together with Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton and his ward committee member for safety Natasha Holdane Olsen, recently conducted an oversight visit of the Turffontein Fire Station and the JMPD satellite station in Kenilworth.
The need arose from the fact that over the past year there had been an inadequate response time to fire emergencies which have resulted in some people losing their lives. In light of this, Crichton wrote to the chairperson of the section 79 safety committee, Clr Hilton Masera, and requested him and his committee to do an oversight of the Turffontein Fire Station. The oversight of the fire station was quite an eye opener as the facility has many challenges with the main concern being there is no fire truck based at that fire station at the moment. The committee undertook to discuss the state of this fire station at their upcoming strategic break away and are hopeful they can come up with some positive solutions.
Crichton said, “I would like to express my gratitude towards Masera for responding to my request and having this oversight. Although we picked up a number of concerns, at least we now have a very clear picture of what challenges the fire station is facing and we can take it from there. I will undertake in my capacity as a ward councillor to approach some of the businesses in my ward to see if they can’t assist with sprucing the place up a little bit. I would like to let my community know that this is just the first step in addressing the challenges that our local fire station faces, and I will not stop working on improving the situation there.”
The committee appeared to be quite impressed with the functioning of the JMPD satellite station and are hopeful that it will allocate a social worker in the near future.
“I would like to express my gratitude towards the officers who work so hard at keeping our community safe during the day and the night. This satellite station has really had a positive impact on the surrounding community,” noted Crichton.
