Dangerous veld to Eikenhof residents

'Walking along Main Service Road unsafe’

RESIDENTS fear for their lives and avoid walking along a stretch of a veld bordering the Main Service Road in Eikenhof, as some residents claim thugs waylay people who pass through it when they go or return from work.

Residents use the route through the veld when they walk to work as it is the easiest and shortest route to use to go to work.

However, residents have claimed not everyone makes it to work safely as there had been reported incidents where pedestrians had been robbed, stabbed, beaten up and even raped.

“This place is not safe. I am using this route because I have no other option, but my life is at risk. In order to make it to work in time, I have to pass through this dangerous veld in the morning and in the afternoon.

“Even if we report the matter to the police, who will they arrest because nobody knows who is committing these atrocities,” said a concerned resident.

Another resident told COURIER it would be better if residents walked in groups of five or more because numbers deter attacks by thugs. One resident complained that a woman who was was passing through the veld alone was mugged and raped.

Communications officer of Mondeor SAPS Nokhulang Duba said she was not aware of any reported incidents: “I will have to check if cases had been opened regarding attacks in the veld, but at this stage I can’t recall any cases that took place at that veld. I am currently on leave, but I will give a feedback as soon as possible.”
