Greater calming measures for Glenanda North roads

I am hoping these measures will bring a greater sense of awareness to motorists as they travel along Beryl Avenue.

EVER since the Balwin complexes were built and Oakdene Parks Drive was opened, residents of Beryl Avenue, Glenanda North, have had a serious problem with the influx of traffic in their street, with many people speeding along that road.

As a result, a few months ago a speed hump was installed in the road.

However, this only catered for a section of the road as the people on the corner still felt the impact of cars speeding past their driveways.

In light of this, Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton, together with a local resident, met with Esther Schmidt of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to discuss the way forward.

Unfortunately, the regulations do not allow for a speed hump to be on a bend. As a compromise, it was decided they would paint yellow lines on either side of the road and a double solid line in the middle of the road as an attempt to stop cars from overtaking one another.

Finally, the resident whose driveway is on the bend had a yellow junction box painted outside the driveway to indicate to the cars that periodically they can expect someone to be pulling in and out of the driveway.

Crichton said, “I would like to thank JRA for coming to the table and trying to assist these residents. I am hoping these measures will bring a greater sense of awareness to motorists as they travel on a residential road where the local residents need to get in and out of their driveways.

“I am committed to working with the JRA to see how we can create calming measures in all the busy roads within the ward.”
