Hawks arrests five JMPD officers for alleged corruption

The five suspects have since appeared in court and were granted bail of R2 000 each.

FIVE JMPD officers were arrested by the Hawks for alleged corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The arrest took place when they reported for duty on June 24 at the JMPD Operations Office on the corner of Village Road and Loveday Street, Wemmer.

It is alleged that during a stop-and-search operation in Cleveland on May 22, the five suspects stopped a vehicle for routine inspection.

Upon searching the vehicle, the suspects discovered an illegal firearm in the possession of the driver. The driver allegedly bribed the suspects with R11 000 to evade arrest.

Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said: “We are extremely concerned about the arrests and the serious nature of the allegations made against the JMPD officers whom are now suspects of a criminal investigation.

“We will not shield any criminal elements within JMPD and will give our full cooperation to the Hawks on their investigations. We will respect and allow the legal process to continue and will ensure a fair trial takes place.”

The suspects were taken for the prosecution at the Primrose Police Station, where a criminal docket was opened. The five suspects have since appeared in court and were granted bail of R2 000 each.

The suspects will also be investigated by JMPD Internal Affairs.
