Local saxophonist chats to COURIER

Artist ready to elevate his music.

A local saxophonist and photographer has his eyes fixed on the ultimate goal, which is becoming the best saxophone player in the industry.

Tariq Fontein was born in KwaZulu-Natal, Ladysmith, but was raised in Johannesburg.

The South Hills-based resident started as a drummer and then ventured on to play the saxophone.

He’s currently working as a data extractor, but his love for saxophone is alive and well and ever growing.

The 21-year-old has been playing the saxophone for the past six years.

He told the COURIER his love for music, in general, started at an early age and he grew with it.

“I loved jazz a lot and that made me fall in love with the saxophone. I now play the saxophone in various events, mostly locally,” said Tariq.

This and that

Tariq loves reading books and he holds a certificate for Grade Six theory which he achieved during his time at the National School of the Arts. He told COURIER that even at school he used to perform, but then he didn’t think he would be so deep in love with the music the way he is now.

Tariq said he never studied photography, but he takes excellent pictures.

“My mother bought a camera and she didn’t use it so I decided to use it for my use and with practice I ended up taking the best pictures,” said Tariq.
