JRA cautions against tampering with barricaded accident and road work areas

Contact JMPD if you see any suspicious activity along the road.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has noticed with great concern a growing trend throughout Johannesburg whereby individuals intentionally remove barricades used to cordon off accidents and road work areas.

JRA said activity has been gaining momentum since the beginning of the torrential downpour this past weekend. As a result of tampering with barricaded areas, a number of motorists found themselves involved in accidents, either by driving into the exposed accident and road work areas or colliding with other vehicles.

All of these incidents could be avoided should there be visible barricades in place. Another downside to the dismantling of barricades is that it hampers and slows down service delivery, as repeated accidents in one specific spot further worsen the state of the accident or road work area.

JRA takes this opportunity to bring to the road users’ attention that the placing of barricades on affected roads is not done to inconvenience anyone but to rather make our roads user friendly and prevent the occurrence of more accidents.

Did you know that placing barricades in accident and road work areas has the following benefits?

1. It ensures safe work zones for contractors carrying out roadworks.

2. Barricades prevent traffic interference or disturbances to work sites.

3. Barricades minimise vehicular and pedestrian accidents caused by open site works.

4. Barricades make it easy for road users to respond to accidents and avoid potential accidents.

5. Barricades provide road users with the required caution in accident-prone areas.

The JRA also appeals to other entities and departments within the City to ensure proper and visible barricading is done at all work sites around the city to avoid incidents.

Should you witness the dismantling of JRA or any other entity’s branded accident or road work barricades please contact the JMPD on 0860 562 874.
