Brackenhurst powerlifting family returns from World Championship in Turkey
A family of three has made themselves proud after being in Turkey for the powerlifting world championship, setting a new deadlift record.
A South African Powerlifting Federation-affiliated family recently competed for the country in the sub-junior powerlifting championships in Turkey.
The Brackenhurst family of three, Sonu, Sonam, and Shaeel Singh competed in the most recent powerlifting world championship held in Turkey and has made the country proud.
Sonu (17) managed to take seventh place in the world out of 13 lifters. This achievement made him hold the African and South African deadlift records and the total record.
Sonu previously bench pressed 85 kg, deadlifted 210kg, which is 5kg more than the standard South African record and squatted 165kg. These feats helped him win a silver medal in the sub-junior division at the South African nationals.
“My father helped me find myself, and as a result, I became a family-oriented young man who appreciates the time and the meaning of life. My advice to my peers is to find their life’s passion and to work hard to pursue it, but they should also remember to enjoy what they have discovered to be their passion,” said Sonu.
According to Shaeel, Sonu and Sonam’s father, he would claim that their initial inspiration came from how much his children enjoyed watching him take part in powerlifting.
Shaeel added that he believes that they have a talent for this sport as a family and they now share that vision.
Sonam (14) stood on the podium at the world championship just after 10 months of training and placed seventh, leaving South Africa and World Commonwealth with a new deadlift record whilst she took the bronze medal for the deadlift.
Sonam previously squatted 95kg, bench pressed 50kg and deadlifted 145kg.
