Mayor Morero rallies the troops to accelerate service delivery

City employees welcomed the address by the mayor and expressed excitement about what the future holds for them under the new political leadership.

New Mayor Sello Dada Morero addressed City of Johannesburg employees at the metro centre about the acceleration in service delivery on October 13.

Morero told city officials that he was once one of them during his tenure in the finance department and assured employees that he sees, hears and will do everything he can to support and encourage an effective, efficient and caring workplace.

“The workers are the most vital part of the organisational body. You are the ones who serve the city. You must dedicate your lives to this organisation, but the city must also look after your well-being,” said Morero.

He urged workers to work harder to make Joburg a world-class African city.

“We all face challenges and have different needs. This is a call to action from us as leaders. We want you as employees to support us fully because we are going to support you fully as well.

“The City of Johannesburg should be more than just a job. It should be your employer of choice and you should be happy and proud to work for it,” said Morero.

Morero said that he would meet with each department in the next two weeks. He also stated that employees will be heard and seen, rather than victimised, for raising concerns.

“Change and solutions to employee concerns will not happen overnight. However, we can promise to divide it into long-term, medium-term, and short-term goals,” said Morero.

Loyiso Masuku, MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, said: “It’s a beautiful day for the city, especially because our executive mayor has set aside some time, before he gets busy, to see the most important people in the City of Johannesburg, which is the workforce. They are the one who drives service delivery for the benefit of the residents who live within the city.”
