Law enforcers joined hands to combat crime in Alberton at the start of the month.
They led a two-day crime-busting operation of Operation O Kae Molao on February 1 and 2 that saw members conduct a roadblock in Heidelberg Road, New Market.
The integrated operation was intensified after a rise in property crimes like the theft of motor vehicles and house and business break-ins.
The joint venture, spearheaded by Ekurhuleni District commissioner Major General Anna Sithole, included stakeholders of the Ekurhuleni District SAPS, the Gauteng Traffic Police, EMPD, CPS Security and other law enforcers.

“We noticed that house and business robberies are increasing, as well as car hijackings, which is why we decided to bring the operation to Alberton. With the operation held on February 1, at least 126 suspects were arrested. Of these suspects were suspects of assault and gender-based violence,” explained Sithole.
She said they nabbed 16 suspects for property crimes, six rapists and six murderers.

“The detectives were hard at work. On February 2, we led a roadblock and chose that road because suspects normally use it. During the roadblock, we arrested 18 illegal immigrants and 39 traffic fines to the value of R15 000 were issued,” said Sithole.
During a briefing before the roadblock, they identified the Alberton SAPS precincts that include Alberton North, Phumula and Rondebult as hot spots in house and business robberies and theft of motor vehicles.
Other teams were reported to be running concurrently with the roadblock team, also combating crime in the surrounding areas.
