Well-attended Africa Day in South Hills
The event served as an exhibition for different stakeholders.
Africa Day was celebrated at the South Hills Recreation Centre on May 25.
Although the event was supposed to be at South Hills Library under Region F, they moved it to the centre because of accommodation and parking space.
The theme for Africa Day 2023 was ‘Opportunities in Challenging Times’.
Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame said the librarian in charge, Nontyileko Tinise-Masakaza, approached Sharon Khoikhoi from the sport and recreation centre to move the event. Some local businesses exhibited their goods.
“The event was live-streamed on the Joburg Libraries Facebook page. Ouma’s Crèche and the sport and recreation department provided the decorations and music.
“Ouma’s Crèche provided a generator as a backup to negate load-shedding. Visitors filled the hall to the brim. South Hills will never be the same,” said Chame.
“The event could not be a success without the dignitaries Dr Refiloe Mabaso (the chairperson of the National Library of South Africa), Ncumisa Gladys (Ngwenya digital librarian at ATNS)|, Nontlantla Moboe (assistant director of the sport and recreation centre in the CoJ), Ouma’s Crèche, Vivian’s Crèche Elsie Mokgobo CoJ LIS management, the CoJ marketing department staff members for Region F libraries, the CoJ Social Development Department, and Dee Community Projects,” she said.
Various NGOs assisted on the day. African attire was the highlight as it was a real fashion parade with the finest African garments.
“Due to technical challenges, we noticed that Buyelwa Sonjica (former Minister of Water and Sanitation) and Putco Mafani (author, public speaker and businessman) could not join us virtually,” noted Chame.
She thanked everyone who contributed to ensuring the event’s success.
