Surge in overnight ATM bombings in Eikenhof and surrounds

The recent surge in overnight ATM bombings in Eikenhof and surrounding areas is a matter of grave concern for both law enforcement and the community at large.

The precinct has experienced a surge in overnight ATM bombings with ATMs in Eikenhof and surrounds being targeted.

According to the chairperson of the Mondeor CPF, Mike Fontes, on October 18 at around 02:00, an ATM at Mulbarton Shell on True North Road was targeted by a group of 12 men.

“Several shots were fired while they tried to access the ATM. They were unsuccessful and they ran to Kliprivier Drive where they got into a taxi and fled. The profile of ATM bombings in the area is that ATMs in and around Swartkoppies Drive are being targeted. The perpetrators come in numbers and are heavily armed.

“They are known to shoot at armed reaction and SAPS. The incidents may be linked to zama zama activities just off Swartkoppies Drive.

“We are warning the public not to approach if they see an ATM bombing in progress. They should call SAPS and observe from a safe distance,” said Fontes.

SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mawela Masondo said Gauteng has been experiencing a hike in ATM bombings recently.

“The deputy provincial commissioner for policing in Gauteng, Major General Tommy Mthombeni, has given an instruction to the police to intensify the patrols and police visibility where there are ATMs.

“ATM bombings are on the rise in the south of Johannesburg. The suspects in Eikenhof managed to escape on foot via the river banks. The police are appealing to the employees at the petrol station and the community to call the nearest police station immediately when they notice suspicious-looking people,” said Masondo.
