SAPS continue to crackdown on illegal firearms

SAPS initiated a comprehensive campaign to eradicate illegal firearms in their fight against crime and stand united for a safer, secure future.

SAPS has identified firearms as the weapon of choice in many criminal activities, particularly robberies and murders.

To address this threat to public safety, SAPS has made it a priority to remove illegal firearms from the streets.

According to SAPS records, firearms feature prominently in criminal incidents, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Over the past years, SAPS has conducted numerous operations resulting in the confiscation of more than 4 000 illegal firearms. Additionally, in the last three years alone, SAPS has seized and subsequently destroyed over 72 000 firearms obtained during operations.

However, SAPS emphasises that community involvement is crucial in combating the proliferation of illegal firearms.

Tip-offs from communities play a pivotal role in assisting the SAPS to trace these illegal firearms. They urged communities to report information regarding individuals in possession of illegal firearms by calling 08600 10111.

In addition to community cooperation, SAPS underscores the importance of responsible firearm ownership among legal firearm holders. They reminded firearm owners to securely store their licensed firearms in safes, ensuring only they have access. Firearm owners must always be in control of their firearms.

For those seeking legal firearm ownership, SAPS outlines a clear process. Prospective firearm owners must undergo training and obtain a competency certificate from a registered firearms training institute.

With this competency certificate, individuals can apply for a firearm licence at their nearest police station. A separate licence is required for each firearm owned.

Moreover, the police reminded firearm owners of the obligation to renew their firearm licences at least 90 days before the expiry date. The validity of the licence varies depending on the type, ranging from two to ten years.

The efforts to combat illegal firearms and promote responsible firearm ownership are crucial steps towards ensuring the safety and security of communities. SAPS urges all citizens to play their part in this collective endeavour, emphasising by working together, lives can be saved and crime levels reduced.
