SASSA beneficiaries urged to avoid ATM withdrawals with new Postbank Black Cards
Free card replacements now available as SASSA Gold Cards are phased out
Thousands of SASSA social grant beneficiaries have been warned to be cautious when using their new Postbank black cards, with authorities urging people to avoid unnecessary ATM withdrawals due to safety concerns and long queues affecting some users.
The rollout of the Postbank black card forms part of a nationwide migration program to replace the old SASSA gold card.
With millions of South Africans relying on social grants every month, Postbank and SASSA say beneficiaries must protect both their money and personal information during the transition.
Key facts beneficiaries need to know:
• The Postbank black card is replacing the SASSA gold card as part of the nationwide migration program.
• Beneficiaries are encouraged to use safer payment options where possible, including swiping directly at participating retailers instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash from ATMs. This is aimed at reducing exposure to crime and long lines.
• Card replacement is free. Beneficiaries only need a valid South African ID or temporary ID and must visit an authorised Postbank replacement site.
• Postbank has warned beneficiaries never to share their PIN or OTP. No official will ask you to pay for a replacement card.
Authorities say scams targeting grant recipients remain a major concern.
Postbank has repeatedly cautioned that officials will never request payment for a new card or ask for sensitive banking details over the phone.
With millions of South Africans relying on social grants every month, staying alert to scams and following official Postbank guidance is essential to avoid losing access to your money.
Beneficiaries who have not yet migrated to the black card are urged to do so as soon as possible at designated Postbank sites to avoid disruptions to grant payments.
