Parents and guardians are encouraged to apply as early as possible when the 2027 Gauteng online admissions process for Grade One and Grade Eight learners opens on August 5.
The application period will run until September 4, with learner placements scheduled to begin on October 15, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile announced on July 27.
Maile said the online admissions system is more than an annual registration process, as every application helps government plan for teacher appointments, classroom space, learner transport, school nutrition, learning materials, furniture, infrastructure development and budget allocations.
“The integrity, accuracy and timeliness of every application determine how effectively government responds to the growing demand for quality public education across Gauteng,” he said.
A decade of progress
Introduced in 2015, the Gauteng online admissions system replaced the manual process that often saw parents queuing outside schools for days in the hope of securing placements.
Over the past decade, the system has steadily improved, with about 400 000 Grade One and Grade Eight learners successfully placed during the 2025 admissions cycle.

The Department of Education continues to refine the system through annual consultations with parents, school governing body associations, principals, school administrators, district officials and provincial call centre agents.
Five-step application process
Parents must complete five compulsory steps for an application to be considered valid:
• Register the parent or legal guardian.
• Register the learner’s residential address.
• Capture the learner’s personal details.
• Apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of five public schools.
• Upload or submit all required supporting documents within seven school days of completing the online application at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za
The department stressed that registration alone does not constitute a valid application. An application is only complete once all five steps have been completed.

Parents are advised to select between three and five schools, preferably within the learner’s feeder zone, to improve the chances of placement.
Choosing only one or two schools may reduce the likelihood of securing a place if those schools reach capacity.
Supporting documents are essential
Supporting documents remain a critical part of the admissions process. Parents must ensure all documents are authentic, certified where necessary and match the information captured on the online system.
Required documents include:
• Identification documents.
• Proof of residence.
• Proof of work address, where applicable.
• Grade Seven report for Grade Eight applicants.
• Immunisation records for Grade One applicants.
These documents must be uploaded to the online system or submitted directly to each selected school within seven school days after completing the application.
The department emphasised that proof of residence is the most important document, as learner placement can only be confirmed once the home address has been verified. Verification measures, including home visits where necessary, will continue to protect the integrity of the admissions process.
Parents submitting fraudulent proof of residence, falsified identity documents or other false information risk having their applications disqualified and may face criminal investigation and legal action.
“We encourage every parent and legal guardian to apply as early as possible, submit authentic supporting documents, follow every step of the application process carefully and make full use of the Department’s official support services whenever assistance is required,” said Maile.
He added that responsible participation by parents will help strengthen public confidence in the education system while ensuring every learner has an opportunity to access quality public education.
