Learn to make homemade face masks
There is nothing worse than seeing yourself in a picture and you’re shining like a beacon!
Battling an oily T-panel? Wanting to boost your hydration levels? Whatever your skin issue, we might have a mask to help you sort it out. And the best bit? You can make them from simple ingredients you’re likely to have in your kitchen.
Tame the oilies
There is nothing worse than seeing yourself in a picture and you’re shining like a beacon! “Put me on the top of the Christmas tree,” you think to yourself. If this sounds like you, try out this DIY mask for oily skin.
Best for: oily skin
Beauty benefits: keeps skin soft, smooth and oil-free.
Ingredients: Half a cup of uncooked oatmeal, 1 dollop of honey, 3 Tbs lemon juice.
Why they work: Uncooked oats can absorb excess oil, honey softens and astringent lemon juice tightens.
Method: Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste. If it’s too dry, add more of the lemon juice or honey. Spread the mixture on the oiliest parts of your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10 minutes and avoid all human contact (you really don’t want your man to spot you in a mask!). Wash off with warm water, dab dry with a towel and you should be left with skin that looks soft and refreshed.
Manic moisture boost
I live in JHB and let me tell you, winter is rough! I tend to look about five years older in the chilly season due to the lines that appear purely from dehydration. This is why I find it essential to exfoliate my skin and use a mask at least once or twice a week. If you can’t find one that works for you on the shelves, give this homemade mask a try…
Best for: dry skin
Beauty benefits: moisturises and nourishes dry, flaky skin.
Ingredients: 2 egg yolks, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp warm olive oil?.
Why they work: vitamin-rich egg yolk nourishes, honey softens and deeply moisturising olive oil can penetrate deep into your skin.
Method: Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Apply to your face and throat in three layers, waiting for the layer to dry a little before applying the next one. Leave for a further 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Then, rinse a second time with cool water.
Get glowing!
Whether you’ve got a wedding, a date or maybe you’ve just looked in the mirror and seen a drab, tired face looking back at you – this radiance-boosting mask will help give you a little extra sparkle when you need it!
Best for: all skin types
Beauty benefits: skin will appear more radiant, elastic and soft to the touch.
Ingredients: 1 minced yellow or red pepper (remove skin), 1 beaten egg white, 1 tsp sour cream.
Why they work: pepper can boost micro-circulation, egg white tightens and sour cream contains lactic acid that can gently exfoliate the dull, dead layers of your skin to reveal a brighter looking complexion.
Method: Mix all ingredients together and apply the mixture to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and then again with cool water immediately afterwards.
