94.7 Cycle Challenge women’s race granted UCI 1.1 status

Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge together with Cycling South Africa have sought and been granted UCI 1.1 status.

Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge together with Cycling South Africa have sought and been granted UCI 1.1 status for the women’s race, making the event more attractive to competitive professionals and national teams.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the governing body of competitive cycling across the world and their endorsement gives elite women cyclists the opportunity to earn valuable UCI points in their attempts to strengthen their chances for places in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The news builds on the event’s already strong focus on female cyclists. Last year, Momentum brought international super-cyclist, Marianne Vos to race in the Cycle Challenge along with Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, South Africa’s international cycling champion. Vos and Moolman-Pasio respectively took first and second place in the 2014 women’s race.

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, now in its 19th year, caters for over 33 000 participants who cycle through the closed roads of Johannesburg.

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and Cycling SA also applied to have the men’s race granted a UCI status for a chance to boost their UCI points on the continent, but with the Tour du Rwanda taking place the day after the 2015 Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, this was declined by the UCI.

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge takes place on November 15 at the Riversands Commercial Park. Entries close on August 31 and are available from www.cyclechallenge.co.za
