Miss Earth SA plants 21 trees in Eikenhof
The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness about the role trees play in the ecosystem.
JOHANNESBURG SOUTH: Carla Viktor (25), Miss Earth SA 2015, visited the Lerato Education Centre in Eikenhof on Monday, November 9, to plant 21 trees and explain to the children the vital role trees play in the ecosystem.
Thornbirds Conference and Wedding Centre, donated the trees to Carla and the Miss Earth South Africa team after learning about their Big O2 challenge. This challenge calls all the Miss Earth winners and participants as well as organisations, businesses, schools and individuals to plant as many trees as they can and to nominate others to do the same.
As Miss Earth, Carla is tasked with leading projects to create food gardens and will be heading to COP21 in Paris soon to talk about climate change. The beauty also planted 42 trees in Mamelodi.
“It makes me happy and proud to see people participate in the Big O2 challenge. This challenge is something that people can do everyday,” Carla said.
Twenty one other countries planted trees as a way to support and endorse the Big O2 challenge after it went viral on social media.
Miss Earth South Africa director, Catherine Constantinides, was present to help plant the trees and was more than proud of her team, the people and children who participated in planting the trees. “I am proud of this initiative. It was picked up in many countries including Nigeria and Congo. We are planting small trees today but some day people we may never meet will sit under these trees and contemplate big dreams and big ideas,” Catherine said.
