South Hills faces water outage as tower runs dry

Johannesburg Water has suspended pumping due to low incoming supply, leaving South Hills and surrounding areas without expected water supply as city reservoirs decline.

Johannesburg Water issued an urgent customer notice on Wednesday evening, warning that central systems remain severely constrained because of higher demand and lower incoming supply, and that overall city reservoirs have declined.

The utility confirmed that the South Hills Tower is empty and that pumping has been suspended because of low incoming supply.

No water is expected in the South Hills supply zone.

The tower serves South Hills and surrounding areas, including parts of Tulisa Park, Regents Park, and the south of Johannesburg.

According to Johannesburg Water, pumping will resume only once incoming supply has improved enough to support operations.

Crown Gardens improves

The Crown Gardens reservoir, which supplies areas around Crown Mines, Crown Gardens and surrounding southern suburbs, has improved during the day and remains satisfactory; however, the system is being monitored closely.

Johannesburg Water says it may provide an alternative water supply in a co-ordinated manner to assist affected customers, and will share further updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Residents in South Hills are urged to use water sparingly and to store water where possible ahead of prolonged outages.
