Dreams come true for Win a Home’s big winners

Single mom has her life changed forever with a new luxury home.

The fourth season of Win a Home, proudly sponsored by Private Property, was filled with high stress, innovation and exciting prospects, and the live finale was the crowning moment of a riveting season.

This year, design contestants competed as duos, creating double the drama and entertainment as big personalities showcased fresh ideas and celebrated local design.

Throughout Win a Home, viewers could vote for their favourite Design Duo on the Private Property website as part of their entry into the grand prize competition. It was a close call but Team House and Leisure pipped the others to the post and captured the hearts of the public. As the winners of Viewers Choice, they received a cash prize of R20,000.

After weeks of being a top trending topic on social media, fans would finally learn which of the dynamic Design Duos would win the coveted R100,000 prize as Judges Choice. For their razzle-dazzle and unconventional style, it was Team Habitat who received a healthy boost to their bank balance. The duo were immediately overcome with emotion as Brad Muttitt and Abiah “Superstar” Mahlase burst into tears, along with their mentor, Amanda Graham of Habitat magazine. The flamboyant and bold couple, who also have a fashion label called AMEN, have said the win is a wonderful foundation upon which they can build an interior design business as an extension of their creative careers.

In the grand prize competition, six finalists were randomly selected from hundreds of thousands of viewer entries to stand a chance of winning their choice of one of the three luxury cluster homes at Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate decorated by the Design Duos.

Win a Home’s grand prize is the largest of its kind on local television. All three decorated homes boast luxurious finishes by Plascon and Caesarstone, top quality bathroom fittings by Geberit, high-end mixers and taps by Grohe, superior flooring by Belgotex, and premier kitchen appliances by Grundig, which brings the value of each of the properties and its’ furnishings to over R3 million.

In a unique coincidence, all six finalists were women: Nokuthula Mahlhangu from Johannesburg, Francis Leibrandt from Mossel Bay, Roberta Zyster from Wellington, Lucia Muller from Meyersdal, Zintle Kom from Plumstead, and Shelane Naidoo from Durban.

The finalists had high hopes of finding the all-important lucky key in their safe, but it was Zintle Kom who unlocked future prosperity as a new resident of Eye of Africa Estate.

The single mom from Cape Town had fallen on hard times and her and her two children are currently staying with friends. When she got the call that she was a finalist, she was driving and was so shocked that she had a minor vehicle accident.

As she celebrated her win, tears of joy streamed down her face and Kent Gush from Eye of Africa Estate was visibly moved as he welcomed her into the community, undoubtedly an exciting and well deserved new beginning for the scholarship programme manager and her young family. As Zintle describes it, the home is an answer to many prayers and a dream come true.

Although the new homeowner hinted that she liked Team VISI’s house, she is excited to visit the estate soon, see the properties in person and make her choice as she starts a new chapter in her life.

Win a Home hits the home stretch

The fourth season of Win a Home, South Africa’s premier interior design reality TV competition hosted on SABC3’s Afternoon Express, has been a huge success, capturing the attention and adoration of fans across the country. With a luxury home at the Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate in the south of Johannesburg up for grabs, the competition is sure to prove a life-changing experience for one lucky SABC3 viewer when the winner is announced live on television on Friday 10th November.

The home is a welcomed addition completing an offering that allows Eye of Africa to provide for purchasers across the spectrum, from young professionals to couples and young families, as well as empty nesters.

Engagement with the Win a Home series on Social Media has been immense and the series has successfully been trending in the top five positions on Twitter during every episode’s broadcasts. This is thanks to a fun mix of drama and the big personalities of the intriguing and talented Design Duos.

Partners Abiah ‘Superstar’ Mahlase and Brad Muttitt certainly delivered on their promise of bringing razzle-dazzle to the competition, with their somewhat outlandish ideas and big concepts. The fashion-designer couple may have brought their mentor, Amanda Graham of Habitat magazine, close to tears with the amount of trademark chandeliers and artificial grass used in their home, but they have stayed true to their vision and created a home that defies convention.

Best friends Banele Khoza and Tshepo Sealetsa caught the attention of House and Leisure magazine editor Tiaan Nagel from the start. The mentor appreciated Banele’s artistic vision paired with Tshepo’s attention to detail. They have impressed the judges with their carefully curated interiors. Banele was also awarded the Gerard Sekoto Award at this year’s prestigious ABSA L’Atelier art awards, winning a three-month art residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Before entering this year’s Win a Home contest, Mpho ‘Designer’ Mphaga and Lesego Masekela were ‘strangers united by design’. Lesego and Mpho both studied interior design and, under guidance of their mentor Annemarie Meintjes, deputy editor of VISI magazine, have stayed the course by designing their colourful home with a fictional client in mind.

After an exciting journey, the competition reaches its peak in a live finale on 10 November at 4pm on SABC3. The winners of the interior design competition will be announced, with the winning Design Duo walking away with a R100,000 cash prize as the Judges Choice, courtesy of main sponsor Private Property. Additionally, the Duo who are voted the Viewers’ Favourite will win R20,000 in cash. If the same Duo get the nod from both the judges and the viewers, they will bag both prizes and walk away with R120, 000.

But the real big winner will be the lucky viewer who will get the keys to a brand-new home. Throughout the competition, viewers have been invited to vote for their favourite Design Duo and this has been their entry into the Grand Prize competition. Six finalists have been drawn randomly from all the valid entries received and will be revealed live on Afternoon Express on Friday 10th November for the final thrilling draw. The prize is the largest of its kind on local television: a home in the Stone Quarter development at the magnificent Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate in the south of Johannesburg, valued at over R3 million.

The Grand Prize winner will have the happy task of choosing one of the three homes decorated by the Design Duos, which are complete with luxurious finishes by Plascon and Caesarstone, outstanding bathroom fittings by Geberit and Grohe and premier appliances by Grundig.

Season 4 of Win a Home has also been a full circle moment for judge Donald Nxumalo of DNX Design. As the first design winner in season 1, Donald’s first-hand experience of the competition has given him empathy with the contestants and he has enjoyed judging each room challenge together with Katlego Kondlo of Plascon and the distinguished guest judges.

The live finale will certainly have viewers on the edge of their seats as the prizes will ultimately change the lives of the winners. For the interior designers, it’s an exciting boost for their careers while the winner of the home will find themselves becoming residents at one of the country’s most sought-after lifestyle estates in the south of Johannesburg.

Expect real thrills, reactions and tears as the Grand Finale of the Win a Home competition on Afternoon Express hits TV screens in a live broadcast on 10 November at 4pm on SABC3.

Ends…

As an exciting innovation, season four’s competitors are design duos. This means double the reality, double the drama and double the fun! The competing designers will be mentored by editors from three of South Africa’s leading home decor magazines: Tiaan Nagel of House and Leisure, Annemarie Meintjes from VISI and Amanda Graham from Habitat Magazine.

The design contestant duos will be vying for two prizes. The first is the Judges Choice Prize, where the panel of expert judges decides on a winning design duo who will receive a R100 000 cash prize. In addition, Win a Home viewers will once again be able to have their say by voting for their favourite design couple. The team with the most votes accumulated at the end of the competition will win R20 000. This means that if they win the judges’ and viewers’ vote, one design duo could win both prizes – a total of R120 000!
