Central Gauteng Athletics halfway through the 2023 Cross Country Season

The third league for the 2023 season saw over 1400 elite and social athletes take on varying terrains.

All eyes were on the main event as more than 50 athletes on the starting line took off to battle it out in the 10km open men and women races.

Nkosinathi Sibiya of UJ dominated the senior men’s race with a relaxed pace finishing first in the time of 33:29, while Simphiwe Thobela and Mzwakhe Mashaba secured second and third positions.

The women’s race title was also up for grabs as the previous winners were out at the National Half Marathon Championships representing the province. Sisanda Dumisa of UJ clocked in 30:03 to secure gold position and in the colours of Rockies, Farida Zwane took the silver position in a time of 40:26 and the 2023 National Junior 5000m champion Ntokozo Gumede in third position with the time 41:38.

The short distances witnessed impressive competition with Boikanyo Mothlamme dominating the senior men’s 2km event race to secure a win in the time 06:26.

Mothlamme competed in his first league of the season outrunning his team mate, Nicholas Whittaker in second clocking 06:36 and Jason Vermeulen rounding off the top three with 06:44.

Meanwhile in the women’s race, Fina Dube of Boxer Athletics club scooped the win with an impressive 08:09 for the same distance event closely followed with the Ramatladi twins in Waterfall colours claiming the second and third position.

Provincial development age categories also did not disappoint as Tyran Brooks of Boxer continued his dominance in the boys Under 14 category.

Brooks who has dominated the ranks since the first league of the 2023 Season, yet again put another showstopper as he ran the 4km Dobsonville course to finish first in the time 13:58 while finishing in the second position was Siyanda Malone in 14:42. In the third position was Cyril Moremi with the time of 15:03.
