The Gauteng MEC for education, Barbara Creecy last Wednesday visited Matshediso High School to assess school readiness for 2014.
The visit focused on admissions, textbook orders, deliveries, academic preparedness and staffing for the school year.
Creecy said the aim of school readiness is to ensure that teaching and learning resumes on the first day of school.
The department has received 131 000 applications for Grade One and 114 546 for Grade Eight.
Parents with queries about placement of their children are advised to visit district offices for assistance rather than going directly to the school.
Creecy said in cases where pupils cannot be accommodated at a school for particular reasons, her office will ensure alternative placement.
There are new 24 schools that will accommodate children at the start of 2014.
