June 16 Memorial Acre launched

Memorial Acre, a symbol of the struggle against apartheid.

The June 16 Memorial Acre in Central Western Jabavu has officially been launched by David Makhura, the Gauteng premier.

Makhura was accompanied by MEC of Infrastructure and Development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza and MEC for Culture Molebatsi Bopape at the opening of the centre.

The R48 million memorial acre served as part of the 38 year celebrations since the 1976 Soweto Uprising where young people fought for better education.

According to a Gauteng government statement this institution will be a centre of memory and a resource centre for the youth to contribute to community development through various youth development programmes that will be run from the institute.
