The Protea Magistrate Court has sentenced a 29-year-old man to eight years direct imprisonment for robbery.
The court heard how the man from Klipspruit West robbed a 44-year-old man of his cellphone at knifepoint.
The incident happened in December last year next to Avalon Cemetery.
“The accused was walking along the Avalon Cemetery when he came across an unsuspecting man. He stopped the man as though he wanted to ask something and when the man stopped, he pulled a knife from his jacket.
“The man tried to run for his life but the accused caught up with him and took his cellphone and ran with it,” said constable Thuli Ngwenya from the Kliptown police.
The robbed man was assisted by the Avalon security guards who chased and caught the robber and handed him to the Kliptown police.
Police would like to extend their appreciation to all the witnesses who assisted them and the court in securing the conviction.
