Illegal connections pose danger

Exposed wiring could lead to deaths

Nancefield Stockwell Street which is close to the nearby informal settlement, Slovo Park,  shows exposed illegal electricity connections protruding from the ground.

The illegal connections are believed to supply unregulated, illegally acquired current to the informal settlement and pose serious risks to residents from the area.

The greatest risk of fatalities is faced by children who unwittingly touch live wires which could result in their deaths. Community leaders have called on residents to avoid the area and to keep their children away as the risks are too great.

According to Ward 17 councillor, Peter Rafferty, the area is notorious for illegal electricity connections and JMPD have confiscated a high number of cables from the area.
