Treating our children as Madiba would want us to

67 minutes for Nelson Mandela.

July 18 marks a significant day in the lives of South Africans. This day calls on all citizens of the rainbow nation to make a difference and to contribute to the growth of the country. On this day, citizens take 67 minutes of their day to do something good for someone else.

Last week Wednesday, Tiny Volker, and her team went beyond the required 67 minutes and hosted a birthday celebration for Madiba. Everyone in Eldorado Park was invited to enjoy a plate of food.

Jumping castles were on the premises for children to enjoy and after eating, they received party packs they could enjoy at home.

The birthday celebration started at 2 pm because the team insisted that all children attend.

“As soon as the school bells rang, the children rushed to see what we had planned for them. Being able to feed so many children was heartwarming.

Parents came too, we ended up feeding more people than expected,” said Laura Willams, an ANC women’s league member.

Finely Watson, the chairperson of the ANC Youth League was part of the team hosting the event. “I am very passionate about giving back to the community.

Being able to do this for them means so much, you can see it on their faces, they truly appreciate it and see that is enough payment for me,” said Watson.

According to Volker, the birthday celebration was a success and was the team was overcome with joy because they managed to feed roughly 200 people that afternoon.

“The children had so much fun and even the older people enjoyed socialising and getting to know one another,” she said.
