Site visit uncovers pressing issues

MMC’s and local councillor embarks on-site visits in Region G.

On July 26, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of housing, Meshack Van Wyk and local councillor, Fazel Jaffer embarked on site visits across Region G to identify and rectify major problems within the area.

Jaffer said that the visit was much-needed and that visible service delivery needed to take place in areas which have been neglected.

The areas that were visited and assessed in Eldorado Park were the Andries Meyer Old Age Home in Extension Three, Lapland and the entire stretch of Union Road.

Jaffer said, “Maintenance issues were discussed at the old age home and the ongoing lights issue in Union Road was discussed as well. The road is pitch black at night, making it unsafe for both motorists and pedestrians at night.”

He added that the Lapland area in Devland was a major concern because the value of the area seems to be decreasing daily with all the newly built shacks and waste material.

The MMC also visited the Olifanstvlei Cemetery where available burial space and general maintenance was discussed.

The Bushkoppies Treatment Plant, Nancefield and Slovo Park, Goudkoppies, Lenasia CBD, Thembelihle and Lenasia South, Unaville were visited as well, where project delays, dumping sites, land invasions, traffic calming measures, approved subsidies, relocation of beneficiaries, grading of streets and rehabilitation were discussed respectively.

Residents in the areas were pleased to see mayoral officials visiting the problem areas.

“Maybe things are starting to look up, I hope they keep visiting and rectifying issues. I hope this visit was not a once-off thing,” said Nonhlanhla Khobo, a Bushkoppies resident.
