Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba with MMC for Community Development Nonhlanhla Sifumba visited the Klipspruit West community.

Speaker of Council Vasco De Gama, PR Councillor Dr Kevin Wax and Ward councillor Fazel Jaffer were in attendance at the public meeting held at Fuscia Park [one of the many underdeveloped parks in the Greater Eldorado Park community].

Residents expressed their displeasure and spoke about issues they felt have been ongoing for far too long. Amongst the grievances was the issue that public meetings and oversight visits only occur when it is election time.

Residents also mentioned the ongoing plea for service delivery in the area and listed examples which included traffic lights that have not been working for years, storm drains that are filled with waste and are not cleaned out and that this ultimately leads to flooding and uncut grass in open velds and parks which creates a place for criminals to hide.

Other grievances included the ongoing drug problem in the community as well as the issue that the community does not have a decent library or any other recreational facilities to ensure the youth is kept busy.

Mashaba and Sifumba addressed the people and asked them to remain hopeful and said that change is on its way.

“As the Democratic Alliance, we are committed to creating one South Africa for all and we understand that we cannot achieve overnight success, it will take hard work and patience from all of us if we want to achieve success,” said Mashaba.

The mayor agreed that the area has been neglected and that a lot of time needs to be invested to ensure the community grows and changes for the better.

After the public meeting the mayor, councillors and residents walked to Heavenly Valley, an informal settlement in dire need of the basics. The mayor and his compatriots engaged with residents.
