The 2020 academic year was a year where schools had to face the harsh reality of possibly losing the entire academic year, the situation was a threat to the entire education system, this brought a lot of fear and anxiety to the class of 2020, and some learners were on the verge of throwing in the towel. Schools were forced to close in a bid to contain the surge in COVID-19 infections.

The spread of the virus saw the education sector divided on how to save the academic year during a pandemic. While declaring the COVID-19 outbreak a national state of disaster, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in March that all schools would be closed as the number of positive cases were rapidly rising, this however did not stop the learners of Bopasenatla to fight for better results.

The school had 62 registered learners and only 53 managed to pass their matric. 22 learners obtained a bachelor pass, 19 obtained a diploma pass while 12 got admission to a higher certificate, with a top achiever, Dyosiba Thembela who bagged four distinctions in Isixhosa, Business Studies, History, and Life Orientation.

To ensure that the school obtains great results, teachers introduced an intervention strategy which consists of extramural lessons on weekends and adding more time during their daily lessons.

“We would sometimes leave the school premises around 7 PM because we were trying to ensure that all learners understood everything covered in class. This was to also offer our learners a proper space to study since we realized that most of our learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds hence, they cannot study at their homes,” said the school’s language HOD Nokamatye Nomvuyiso.

The school is currently looking for sponsorships that will sponsor the learners with school uniforms and food for after schools’ lessons.
