Pimville rapper Mastafari has clinched a nomination in the 2021 Mzansi Arts and Media Awards(MAMA). The 18-year-old is nominated for Best Hip Hop Artist, with hits including Pop Again and Female Joyner. Speaking to Soweto Urban, Mastafari, real name Bonolo Maboea, said she was grateful for the support she has received.

“My family has been very supportive,” she said.

The rapper recently started tertiary but said the increased workload has not deterred her.

“It’s not as hectic as I anticipated it would be. I think if you manage your time well you can sort the schedules between music and studies,” she said.

“The great thing about is you meet other people in the media space, trying to achieve the same goal. In high school, we were all different and everyone wanted their own thing. Here we’re all chasing the same dream and it’s great because we get to collaborate, work together and improve one another,” she said.

Without getting into details, Mastafari admitted that she has two singles scheduled for release later this year.

For upcoming artists like herself, Mastafari said it was important to expose themselves.
“I’d say the lesson is that it’s important to put yourself out there you know? Many people are trying to achieve the same thing you want to achieve. Have an identity, work on yourself and your craft. Know yourself and your identity,” she concluded.

You can cast your vote by sending the SMS: MAMA 1181 to 40439. voting lines will close on July 31, 2021.
