Emndeni brings thrilling end to the SML

Like most finals, the high-tempered encounter featured its fair share of drama when Emndeni was awarded a penalty.

Emndeni Masters claimed a 2 – 0 victory over Zola Masters in a highly contested final of the Soweto Masters League (SML) in Zola on Sunday.

The local rivals both respectively disposed of their semi-final opponents to set up Sunday’s derby of a thrilling final. Tsepo ‘Figo’ Mokone and Ayanda ‘Diouf’ Lumkwane scored a goal each to see Emndeni trump over their bitter rivals. Speaking to Soweto Urban after the final, winning coach, Dona Mafeto said his side was confident that they could win.

“Our aim was always to reclaim our position at the top, we lost about two cups before I joined so this was an important one for us and fortunately the boys came out guns blazing. I’m very thankful to the players they worked very hard, full credit to them,” said Mafeto.

Speaking for the players, Emndeni Masters captain, Star Ngidi also heaped praise on his teammates.

“Very happy with the team performance, the players stuck to the plan. I think the difference between us and the opponents was the mental strength to remain focused. They (Emndeni Masters) made it very difficult for us but we stuck to our plan managed to get the two goals. I am proud of the boys,” he said.

Like most finals, the high-tempered encounter featured its fair share of drama when Emndeni was awarded a penalty. Zola Masters, Chairman Thulani Zwane said he felt his side was hard done by the controversial decision.

“Look, the boys played well and gave their all. But it’s a bit disappointing to lose in that manner. Especially because last time something similar happened to us and a penalty was not given for us, but today something happened a penalty was given against us. Overall, I’m proud of the boys, we played a top game and dominated the match. It was just not meant to be,” concluded a visibly disappointed Zwane.
