Local paddlers take part in SA Canoe Marathon Champs

Local paddlers took home a number of podium positions, medals and some being among the top podium positions.

A number of trained paddlers of all ages, from the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club participated in the South African Canoe Marathon Championships races in St Francis Bay Eastern Cape.

The championships were held from June 15 to 17 and saw paddlers from throughout South Africa competing with each other.

Having trained hard at the marathon series of races building up towards this event, the local paddlers took home a number of podium positions, medals and some being among the top.

Phineas Zulu, St Davids Marist College coach partnered with John De Villiers from the Western Cape to race in the Sub Veteran age men’s category and achieved the second place position in a time of 1 hour 30 minutes.

In the Under 10 Girls race, Amile Mzolo was the third place finisher and in the boys category, Kaylen Thato Armdorf finished seventh, with Nkosinothando Mzolo coming in tenth this year.

Kyle Armdorff won the Under 12 podium position, having also achieved well with gold and silver medals at the SA Sprint Championships held in Gauteng earlier in the year, and also in the local training marathon events.

Girls Under 14 included Siphesihle Radebe and Aphiwe Njiyela and in the Doubles K2 race, Juliet Mzibeli finished fourth place in the Under 14 girl together with Germiston Lake’s Sinenhlanhla Twala.

Nhlamulo Mahwayi was forth in the Under 14 event and Sbusiso Tyiki and Nhlamulo Mahwayi were third in the doubles K2 Under 14 race.
